EMERGENCY FUND
Appeal.By Red Cross An appeal for more funds for emergencies was made by the president of the North Canterbury Centre of the Red Cross Society (Mrs R. I. Brake).
Mrs Brake told the quarterly meeting of the centre that the emergency cupboard had provided blankets and other goods for 39 families in the last three years. In each case, the family lost its home by fire.
The meeting was attended by delegates of 53 subcentres.
Mrs Brake said the centre planned a membership drive, to take place in conjunction with the floral festival early next year. Last year the Red Cross in New Zealand had an increase of only 350 members, she said.
Mrs Brake also appealed for more funds for the 10C per cent, disability fund. This was “in the red,” she said. The Red Cross stall for one day at the New Zealand Industries Fair made £79 3s 6d, it was reported.
The centre will arrange a spring party for old folk on October 17. The party will be held at the centre’s depot in Cashel street.
