EASY GALLOP FOR COMMANDING

“The Press' Special Service

AUCKLAND, October 5. The top three-year-old Commanding was restrained in his work at Ellerslie this morning and he showed not the slightest trace of the speed with which he is expected to "burn off” his Great Northern Guineas opponents on Saturday. Six furlongs. 50 feet out on the course proper, took Commanding Imin ISsec. That was easy for him. but nevertheless the best of the morning.

Rondavel assisted Commanding toward the end of his work and in the process put on a performance out of the ordinary for one in the hack class. Dry Martini. Rock of Alarm. Mali and Romance also went soundly The ground was lifting only slightly on the surface and was in excellent order for the galloping. If the fine spell continues it should be fast for the week-end.

Commanding (Mudford) bef;an easily from the six furongs and was led by Rondavel (G. Ritchie) over the last three in 39sec

Rondavel was to have joined Commanding at the half-mle but instead broke away clear in front. She was allowed to go wide so that Commanding reached her after a couple of furlongs then right at the finish she drew away again by a length and a half. Strode Out Wefi

Commanding strode out nicely in the middle part and was then kept well in hand until the finish. He looks an excellent prospect for the Guineas. So does Rondavel for the

Ascot Stakes. She was timed for half a mile in Slsec.

Dry Martini (Mudford) strode over six furlongs in Imin 20 2-ssec. the first three at a good clip and the last three easier in 41 3-3 sec. Having won the Avondale Guineas, Dry Martini is one of the more worth-while candidates for Saturday's big three-year-old event. The Avondale Guineas was his last start and he seems to have thrived meanwhile.

Mali (Mudford), one of Dry Martini’s stablemates in K. J. Heaton’s team, sprinted half a mile in 50 l-ssec. which was not bettered.

Another, Romance (Mudford), went half a mile in 50 4-ssec. That was a solid effort for a maiden three-year-old filly. Another as good might make her hard to beat in the Ascot Stakes.

AU gong well Dry Martini. Mali and Romance will be taken south next week for the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting, where Dry Martini and Romance will take on the WeUington Guineas (Dry Martini) and the Desert Gold Stakes. Gold Reel (Walters) w-as too good for Lorina (Vasas) over naif a mile, going clear ver.v quickly and finishing three lengths the better in 50 4-ssec. Gold Reel is the two-year-old chestnut colt by Gold Nib from St Teresa in R. G. Stenning’s team. It looks as though he is going to be good.

Began Moderately The Mitchelson Cup runner Beau Way (Walters) began at a moderate pace from the six furlongs and covered the last five in Imin 4sec. Leon’s Beau

(medium weight) was going keenly alongside Quick Gold (J Fisher) at the finish of five furlongs in Imin 4sec. According to her trainer. M K. Lindsay. Quick Gold will miss the Howick Handicap because of her very wide barrier position. Rock of Alarm (G. Ritchie) and Bewitch (Hart) were travelling nicely just about together at the end of six furlongs in Imin 21sec. the last three in 39 3-ssec A fast sprint on Tuesday assured Rock of Alarm a posit ion among the favourites for the Flying Handicap. Summer Morn (J. Fisher) led her stablemate Uppercut medium weight) over six furlongs in Imin 19sec. Summer Morn began keenly so that she quickly put a break on Uppercut. In the finish she was going well, a couple of lengths to the good. Grand National (Walters) ran half a mile in Msec. Over the same ground. Joytax (Mudford) and Lenka (Bennett) returned Slsec They are smart fillies which might be useful eventually. Carolyn Anne IF. Ritchie) and My Sister (Tait) dashed over three furlongs in 36 3-ssec. The two-year-olds Forever ( Mudford) and Lapland (Hart) did three furlongs nicely in 38sec. They are in a bracket for the Welcome Stakes, both being raced by Mr W. Fisher.

»ASWIS Lapland is the one by Gabador from Sister Sai.
