RACING Subside Tipped For Reefton First Leg
Subside should manage to give weight all around in the County Handicap at the Reefton Jockey Club’s meeting tomorrow. Subside, with 9-0, will be giving away up to 181 b, but looks equal to the task on Westport form. Subside brolse a long, lean patch at Westport where she won the C. E. Craig Handicap after a second to Matauwhi on the first day of the meeting.
Her Imin 37 2-ssec for a mile in the Craig Handicap is a record gallop for Westport. and she was not pushed hard to establish it. Ocean Melody was ihe best of Subside’s rivals in the Craig Handicap and, will be one of few backed with any confidence to beat the topweight at Reefton.
Ocean Melody has gone up from 8-0 to 8-11. so will meet Subside 51b better. Under the higher scale of weights he stands a good chance of outfinishing the veteran Faux Tirage mare if conditions are similar to those at Westport. But if there is any deterioration in the weather, and it develops into a mudlarks’ track, Subside will be firm in favour.
Gaytana has a chance of running into one of the places on her fourth behind Subside, Ocean Melody, and Korallion on Monday. She has done little racing since her winter spell, and could improve more than some of the others in this field.
Korallion will probably be the best of the light-weights if the track is heavy. Mon Roi The Reefton Hack Handicap, second leg of the double, gives promise of another topweight's victory. In this case it is Mon Roi, winner of two of his last four races, and runner-up in the other two. Mon Roi won the Dalray Hack Handicap over a mile and a quarter at Westport on Monday. He did not have much to spare at the end, but he will not be opposed here by Wyebank and Candida, which were close behind in the minor places, or the Riccarton-trained Ghana, which was fourth. None of the others, except for Munster King, has worthwhile form, and this Washdyke hack was unplaced at Westport on Monday. However, he was placed on the first day of the meeting, and won at Orari five days earlier. The most likely improver of the others could be Master Conclusion. He did not develop very good form when trained in the North Island, but he has been placed at a middle distance in stronger class than this.
