Cycling USED ONE LEG

Dalton In Tour de France (NZ. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Oct. 5 W. A. Dalton, the NewZealand Olympic Games cyclist, rode for seven days during the Tour de France last July using only one leg. Dalton suffered a leg injury in a smash during the race. His leg swelled and he ' had a hole in his ankle but he continued to ride. Later he pulled a ligament in his good leg and pedalled by pushing his leg with his hand. “1 would never have made some of the climbs if the crowd had not pushed me up.” Dalton said. “I nearly fell off at numerous places and it was only through the help of the other competitors that I managed to stay on my cycle.’’ Dalton's best performances overseas included winning the award for the most meritorious performance by a British rider during the Tour de Britain and a sixth • placing in the world pursuit event. He will compete in the three-day Tour de Southland, which will begin on Thursday and a six-day sponsored race, which will begin in Auckland on October 30.

During Christmas he will contest track racing over a Southland circuit.
