BRITISH TOUR
N.Z. Reaction To Proposal (N.Z. Pt ess Association) AUCKLAND. Oct. 5. The British Rugby League’s proposal that, its team play two test matches only in New Zealand next year was not the New Zealand council’s idea of what constituted an international tour, said the New Zealand secretary iMr J. E. Knowling) today. Mr Knowling was commenting on the British proposal of a five-test tour of Australia and New Zealand with a test match on each of five successive Saturdays during May.
‘The idea of an international tour is to play against other centres in the country so that we can select players for our test team,” said Mr Knowling. “If the team only played tests we would have to hold trials to select players for the test matches. Only about 15 or 16 players would get international play then.
“The actual percentage that Britain would receive for its tour of New Zealand has never been discussed by the council.” said Mr Knowling. The New Zealand council will hold a special meeting on Saturday afternoon to discuss the proposed tour by Britain.
