Soccer TOP WELLINGTON SIDE TO PLAY TECHNICAL

Apart from the absence of the wing-half B. Chee, the Technical first division soccer team will be at full strength for its clash with Wellington’s Northern side at English Park tomorrow. Technical and Northern are the first division champions this year in their centres. The Technical side will comprise K. Flintham in goal. D. Waugh and I. Graham at full-backs. K. Hendy, R. van Dalsum and G. Jones at half-backs, and R. Higham. W. Shannon, E. Charlton, A. Verham and W. Logan in the forwards. The Northern side will include the 1961 international players A. Inglis and D. Buller, and the Wellington representatives S. Foye and M. McDonald.' Also playing

for Northern will be the former Canterbury and New Zealand representative D. Charlton, This will not be the first time Northern has played against a Christchurch dub team. Twelve years ago the Wellington club made its first appearance in the city—at the time, its team was a promising third division team of young Chinese players.

Its opponent in 1949 was another Chinese team playing in the Canterbury third division Oriental. The match was played at the King’s Birthday week-end and the Wellington team won 6-0.

The Wellington club has undergone tremendous changes since the days when it was an all-Chinese club. As the club became better known, players from England and Europe were attracted until today its strength lies almost entirely in the new group. Apart from its present distinction of having three New Zealand representatives in the side, the club has> contributed other notables to the sport.

Mr James Young, one of the founders of the club, was New Zealand president during the year of the visit of the Hong Kong Chinese team, and the club’s first secretary, Mr E. D. Kwok, has since been the secretary of the Canterbury Table Tennis Association.
