DORIAN CLUB RECITAL
Large Audience At University
Members of the Dorian Club gave a recital in the University Hall yesterday afternoon to a large audience.
Joyce Barrell and Glenys Ball played an arrangement by Cyril Scott of Bach’s Fugue alia Gigue. It was taken rather too fast for details to be heard. Mary Phipps played Scarlatti’s Sonata in F with clear and neat touch. Steibelt’s Rondo in E flat was played by Glenys Drummond with merry spirit. It was a charming composition. An expressive performance of Schumann's Novelette in E was given by Catherine Petch. She produced a pleasantly singing tone in the middle section of the work
James Dodd, accompanied by Margaret Mahoney, sang “Thou Art Repose” and “The Post,” by Schubert. Evelyn Tregurtha played Chopin’g Etude in A flat, Op. 25, No. 1, with rippling touch. Kay Brownscombe produced a mellow tone in Faure’s Impromptu in F minor, Liszt’s “Valse Oublie” was played by Margot Daly with a crisp touch which conveyed atmosphere. Debussy’s “Tarantella” was given life and glitter by Shona Nesbit, and Margaret Williams played Mendelssohn’s Scherzo in E minor with excellent control of touch which brought the work vividly to life. Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in G Sharp minor was played with lively touch and neat shaping by Judith Thornley, and Beverley Kench aptly caught the spirit of Rachmaninoff’s “Humoreske”—a littleheard but attractive work The programme ended with York Bowen’s "Rigadoon" played as a piano-duo by Joyce Barrell and Glenys Ball. The performance had plenty of eclat. —C.FB
