Wrestling National Titles Begin At Wairoa

WAIROA, Oct. 5. The opening session of the New Zealand Amateur Wrestling Union's national championships at Wairoa today saw an indication that titleholders of previous years have made sufficient progress to threaten the position of at least two - of last year’s winners. D. Mudgeway (Hawera), who won the bantam title at the Empire Games in Auckland in 1950 and who has been absent from the national scene for about three years, beat the present titleholder, P. Moore, of Canterbury. B Barnett, of Wellington, who held the feather-weight title in 1955-56 and 1958, won his ’'out today in good style in the first 50 seconds. Results were:— Fly-weight P Massett! Molnar was refused permission to compete in the New Zealand wrestling championships which began at Wairoa yesterday. Molnar arrived in Wairoa as Waikato’s representative to contest the light-weight division, but as he had net previously applied for a transfer from the Canterbury district committee the president of the New Zealand Union (Mr L. W. Woods) ruled that Molnar could not take pert in the championships, said the president of the Canterbury district committee (Mr S. McGregor) in a statement yesterday.
