2000 Troops Taking Part In Exercise

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND. Oct. 4. Two Vampire aircraft from Ohakea, firing rockets in an area of the Desert Road, marked the opening of the Regular Army’s “Exercise Evaluate” early this morning. The Vampires had fust finished their mission when eight 25-pounder field guns of the 161st Battery began firing on to the same target area. Then in the distance, nine of the new M4l tanks took up the firing with their 76mm guns. Two thousand troops, including the Ist Battalion. New Zealand Regiment, who are being field tested before leaving for Malaya, bivouacked in the area last night. Because of low fog. the Vampires were held up for one hour and a half. This was the second delay tn the exercise. Yesterday afternoon, a Sunderland flyingboat from Hobsonville, bringing 18 Special Air Service Squadron men to land on Lake Taupo, turned back near Hamilton because of the weather. The men came on by road overnight Early

this morning they encountered armoured “enemy" troops in the TurangiTokaanu area.
