ARAPUNI TROUT
Skindiver Seeks Catch (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Oct. 3. The days of "Long Jack,” an almost legendary 401 b brown trout at Arapuni appear to be numbered. . A contracting skindiver, Mr Dennis Twiss, of Cambridge. has been ordered to catch the fish ,by any means by the Wildlife Division of the Internal Affairs Department and the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. Long Jack is wanted for research. He is reputed to have broken more freshwater fishing tackle than any other fish in New Zealand. Mr Twiss has seen . him three times in the head-race at Arapuni, “I first saw him in November last year," said Mr Twiss, who is a keen angler. “I got such a shock that I went and got another diver to come down and look too. “Twice, since he has reappeared in the head-race when I have, been working there, and fach time another diver has seen him.” Attempted With Knife Mr Twiss says the fish is eight inches between the eyes across the head, and as long as-Mr Twiss (sft 9in) is tall between shoulder and knee. His first attempt to catch the trout will be made with a knife soon after Christmas. If he fails Mr Twiss will try again with a speargun. Arapuni anglers have known for years that something very big lurked in the dark waters of the headrace. For seasons it has taken their gear almost as fast as they could get it into the water. I Record Trout In N.Z. (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 3. Few records appeared to have been kept by acclimatisation societies of record trout caught in New Zealand, a freshwater research scientist said today. The world record, for a rainbow, was 411 b, caught in the United States. This was a lake trout, gs were three 38-pounders caught in 1960 in British Columbia. '
