Can tt be preventedf *■ True onion mildew can be tackled by reducing the amount of fertilizer applied. Are you sure that the onions are not infected by grey mould of onions, a much more common infection, and one that is easier to prevent. Grey mould usually occurs on land where onions have been grown too often. If the seed is treated with calomel dust before planting you can be fairly certain of eliminating the disease. You should use i lb. of calomel dust to t lb. of onion seed. Dithan* Maa may be applied tb muons to control mildew at the rate of t|a lb. per acre. Basic Slag on Pasture Qi I propose to apply basic slag to pasture land. Haw much should I use and how long mil it be necessary to keep stock out of the paddocks after the slag has been spreadT *' A suitable dressing of high grade basic slag would be 6 cwt. per acre. Stock can be turned on to the paddocks as soon as there has been a good rain to wash the slag off the leaves of the grass. Patches of Thistles Qi 1 have used Shell Weedkiller E to control Variegated and Scotch thistle. The treatment has been very successful and the weeds are reduoed to occarional patches.
