Soccer Canterbury Beats The Rest, 5-0

Canlarbury’t aoncer repreMatattve side best The Rest by five (M ja to nU st English Park «* Saturday. It »« a ragged match, with Canterbury combining well but finishing carelessly, and The Best seeing <«anpsraUvely little of the play. That Canterbury was limited to only five goals was a tribute to the dogged defence of the opposing side. Canterbury’s defence was just as strong, and allowed The Rest's forwards no ehanees for a clear shot at goal. The teams were:— Canterbury^— D. Smith; W. Boger, P. Frost; R. Durant, J. Le Poidevin. H TaylorP. Saunderson, T. Haydon, E. Chariton, P. Rennell, W. Ix>gan. The Rest.—E. Brown; D. Waugh, I. Laby; D. K Clark, D. Simmonds; I McCallum, K. Olley, A. van Rooyen, D. Anderson, W Shannon. The defenders in the Canterbury side had an easv cay against the disorganised attack of The Rest. Smith, ;n goal, had no genuine shots to save; only one drive which hit the cross-bar could be called a possible chance. The full-backs, Rodger and Frost, were never extended. Le Poidevin, at centre-half, again showed his defensive qualities and was not slow to return the ball upfield to change the direction of the attack. In the forward line Rennell and Logan combined well in the first spell, but ia er in the match they both tended to wander. Haydon sent some pile-driving shots into the goal, something w hich he has not been able to accomplish in earlier matches this season. He was very quick to the ball. Brown, in goal for The Rest, had a hard match, but came through it well. The goals which Canterbury scored were all from very hard and difficult shots, and Brown did well to save sev-

era! other good shots. Laby, at left-back, had a good match and held Saunderson for a long period in the second spell.

Good Form Clark continued the good form which he has shown in club matches this season and allowed the dangerous Charlton little leeway. The winghalves, Stapley and Simmonds, were pinned down to defence for most of the game, and could make little contribution to the attack. Stapley was the more energetic.

The Rest's forward line did not show combination at any stage, and was quite unable to work as a unit. Anderson was the best of the attackers, but the chances which he made were too often wasted because a teammate was too siow to the ball. McCallum, on the right wing, was never in the game, and Olley had a poor match.

Goals for Canterbury were scored by Haydon (three), Logan and Saunderson. Mr J. Sheffield was the referee.
