‘Launderers’ Research Not Sufficiently Recognised’
Lacking publicity, the work of th# Institute of Leunder-«*Dry-cleaner* and Dyetx of New Zealand wu receiving insufficient recognition, the preaident (Mr D. Horne) told the annual meeting on "ft is a bad thing indeed tn read in the papers of research success overseas, knowing that findings have been arrived at. in this country through local endeavour. “Australia has recently been stealing our thunder." Staff' shortage was the biggest problem faced by the i institute last year, said Mr j Home. This had made the : year to some extent disappointing. The institute had i hoped to do more than it : has accomplished. i The institute, although not making headlines, had not failed in research, he said One vital work was the reconciliation of overseas findings to New Zealand conditions. There were, however, several long-term investigations to be started. "We have the . facilities, the equipment and the funds. Given the staff there is much to be done.” i Mr Horne said. Mr Horne mentioned the Government proposal to investigate Government and Government-sponsored research organisations, and the later decision to include the work in the order of refer- ' ence of the Royal Commission on State Services “Whether we agree that this is the body best qualified to assets the situation 1 and recommend improve, ments, we should welcome this recognition at the highest level that a problem does ex- 1 ist and must be overcome."
