Resistor Wins Mount Somers Handicap Easily

Resistor gave an outstanding display of trotting after starting from 48 yards to tvin the Mount Somers Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday. She was a winner at New Brighton at her previous start and in the circumstances she paid a false win dividend of £8 6s fid.

The race was marred by an accident at the straight entrance. Foam went back on Chances Are and Fallacious, both of which lost their drivers, and most of the field suffered interference.

Catapult made most of the pace, with Resistor improving sharply in the back straight to be eighth and handy at the half-mile. Control was left in front afterthe mix-up at the straight entrance and shaded Resistor racing to the final furlong, with Bandsaw close up, clear of Rojo, which was breaking, and Catapult. Resistor showed great stamina to take the measure of Control half a furlong out and ran on strongly to win by two lengths. Control trotted his best race in Canterbury to take second place four lengths in front of Bandsaw, which was handily placed most of the way, Graeme Scott, which broke badly at the start, made up a lot of ground for fourth three lengths behind Bandsaw, with a short length to Fiammetta, two lengths to Catapult, a length to Air Command and a length to Rojo. Decisive Win Southern Cross followed up a stylish win at Methven a week earlier with an easy win in the Seafield Handicap. He hesitated at the start and appeared to meet trouble when Cairnbrae galloped in. Storm Crest took the lead from Young Betty at the end of about three furlongs, but with less than six furlongs left Heathmount too' , r control from Antonius. Southern Cross improved from eleventh just after the start to be third before the half-mile. Southern Cross was pacing easily in front racing to the furlong, with Heathmount, Dark Louise, Johnny Thunder, First Song. Parados, Young Betty and Prinsuva showing up. Southern Cross was confidently driven over the last 100 yards to win by a length and a half. First Song fought on strongly to take second place by a nose from Dark Louise, which paced a sound race. Johnny Thunder was a length back fourth, just ahead of Parados, Prinsuva and Heathmount, with Young Betty next, clear of Hydro Boy. The win favourite, Cairnbrae, lost his chance at the start, and Terry Gowan and Count Cavan gave ground. Sarona Stays On Sarona finished boldly over the final furlong to win the Elgin Handicap. Sarona came through on the inside of Loyal Brigade just inside the furlong and responded well to win decisively by a length from Loyal Brigade, which was never very far away. Trusted, the favourite, was well back early. He received a lucky run through on the inside in the back straight, but could not muster a very strong finishing sprint. He was a length and a half behind Loyal Brigade, lasting to beat the fast-finishing AR Red by a nose. All Red came from near the tail of the field racing to the straight. Local Princess, which met trouble at the start, was two lengths back fifth, ahead ot Kyle View. Whipaway and Meadow Cheer.
