EARTHQUAKE FORECASTS

Prediction By Dr. Siple

Small gyrations occur at the Sou’h Pole station, and Dr. Paul Siple. an American authority on the Antarctic, believes they are not unconnected with large earthquakes occurring in other parts of the world. He said in Christchurch yesterday that it might even be found that earthquake forecasts could be made at the Pole. He said the South Pole station was in a unique spot to observe the Tiros and Nimbus weather satellites, and he thought that gravity changes could also be measured better there lhan anywhere else on earth.

Dr. Siple first went to the Antarctic as a boy scout with Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd in 1928.

Today he will go to Wellington where he will carry out some of his scientific exchange work with New Zealand scientists.
