MAIREHAU HIGH SCHOOL
Next Building Discussed
The lay-out of the next classroom block to be erected at the Mairehau High School was discussed for a long time at a board meeting on Tuesday evening. The headmaster (Mr A. B. Ryan) suggested a number of amendments to the pro. posed plan, particularly urging that a corridor be included in the upper storey. He said that besides the inconvenience of having »to approach classrooms from either end there could be an egress danger in case of fire. New staff appointed were:— Mr A. W. Tritt, M. A., (honours in history) from the Putaruru High School; Mr B. S. Falloon, M. A., (English), L.RSM., L.T.C.L. from the Cambridge High School; Mr B. W. Fitfield, 8.A., from the Christchurch Teachers’ College; Mr R. G. Thomson, 8.A., from the Christchurch South Intermediate School. Mr Ryan said the school was particularly pleased to have as teacher trainees a woman from Malaya and two men from Sarawak. “This is our modest contribution to. ward the success of the Colombo Plan undertaking and it also reminds our own pupils that these people are our neighbours and that our destiny is inseparable from theirs,” he said. The Mairehau Horticultural Society’s gift of £25 had provided an azalea bed of 30 specimens and a rose garden of 52 bushes. An anonymous gift of £5 had provided 10 flowering cherries along the walk from the Hills road entrance.
