RADIATION LEVELS

3 Australian Tests

(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) CANBERRA, Sept 27.

The Russian nuclear explosions were not expected to lead to any significant levels of radioactive fallout in Australia, the Supply Minister (Mr Alan Hulme) said in a press statement yesterday. Mr Hulme said the great bulk of the fallout from the tests would be deposited in the Northern Hemisphere. The fallout was unlikely to be detected in the Southern Hemisphere for from four to six weeks, he said. “When the activity does begin to rise, it will be small and will constitute no more than a very small addition to the natural background radiation," Mr Hulme said.

Mr Hulme said that since Russia began the new series of nuclear tests, Australia had stepped up her atmospheric testing programme. Fallcut stations which bad been disused in recent years have been put to work again. Reliable measurements took much time and this precluded day-to-day statements on fallout levels, such as were made in the Northern Hemisphere countries, where the levels were far higher.

The results of the current measurements will be published in scientific journals in due course, Mr Hulme said, in the press statement
