RESPIRATORY UNITS

Board Supports Recommendation

Respiratory units were needed at the main centres, and the medical staff of the North Canterbury Hospital Board was very anxious to have one established in Christchurch. Dr. Morton, the .board’s Medical Superin-tendent-in-Chief, told the board yesterday. It was decided to support a recommendation to this effect made recently by the Faculty of Anesthetists to the Health Department. TTie name suggested for the type of unit was somewhat misleading, said Dr. Morton. A medical investigating committee had suggested instead that the designation should be “assisted respiration unit” This would be much better, since those to be treated would be patients who were having dfficulty with breathing.

Normally, the number of patients to be expected in Christchurch was small, but such a unit could be somewhat pushed if there was a poliomyelitis outbreak.
