SUPWAY FOR LIFEBOAT

£9627 Contract For Sumner

A tender of £9827 by K. G. McCaw, Ltd., has been accepted by the City Council for the Sumner lifeboat slipway and boatshed. Included in the tender was £l5O for removal of a wrecked launch. This charge will be met by the Customs Department. A Government subsidy on a total amount of £lO,OOO at the rate one-third Government, two-thirds council was available, the works commute told the council. So far, £4029 worth of work had been done in repairing and strengthening the breakwater and removing the rock bar, leaving £5941 available for subsidy. The shed was a subsequent commitment not included in the work covered by the £lO,OOO.

If all the contract work was completed before next March the council would be expected to provide £7487, but it had on the annual estimates £3OOO for part of the cost, the committee said. It had not been expected that agreement could enable the work to proceed so early in" the year as to spend all the money allocated. Originally, the subsidy was thought to be two of State to one of council funds, but this had been reversed.
