Roading Work Approved By City Council

Additional work under roading, street improvements, and streetworks loans has been approved by the City Council at the request of its works committee. Some of the jobs approved in August of last year had not been commenced because of sueb reasons as sewer laterals, shortage of contractors, and shortage of labour, the committee said, but steady progress had been maintained.

Of' the roading loan of 1955 for heavily trafficked stree’s and bus routes—originally for £2.5m but reduced to about £500.000 —the committee said many works were completed and approval had been given for some others. The council agreed to the request that Woodham road, Papanui road (north of Mays road), and Kerrs road should now be put in hand. New works authorised under the s’reets improvement loan, 1957, were:—Major Hornbrook road, Wakefield avenue (Nayland street to Arnold street), Augusta street, Maffeys road,, Rudds

road, Kearneys road. Keighleys road, McGregors road (Keighleys road-Butterfield avenue), Fleete street, Kingsford street (New Brighton road-Mundys road), Bexley area (temporary work), Beach road and Mathers road, west of Tankerville road.

Some of the works were dependent on sewers and widening work being done first the committee said. The street works loan, 1959, covered the reconstruction of some suburban carriageways not provided for in the roading loan and also for the replacement of some defective kerbs, channels, and paths, the committee said.

Progress, although steady, had been disappointing because of delays caused by labour shortage and the installation of sewer laterals. Some of the streets scheduled in the loan now had fair surfaces, and these were being held over in favour of those requiring more urgent reconstruction. In addition to those already sanctioned, the council approved Marriotts road and Aidwins road (Linwood avenue to drain).
