Council Stops Use Of Youth Camps

Occupation of the Hibburt Park Youth Camp at Spencerville, owned by the Associated Churches of Christ, was prohibited by the Waimairi County Council last evening. It was decided that the buildings could not be occupied until the requirements of the county health inspector were satisfactorily carried out and the buildings were licensed under the camping ground regulations.

The finance committee reported that the condition of the buildings had been brought to the council’s notice through a routine inspection by the Christchurch Fire Board inspector and the council’s building inspector. The Fire Board had advised the council that a

great fire hazard existed in the camp buildings. In addition, the county health inspector’s inspection had revealed ‘‘grossly overcrowded sleeping quarters, insufficient ventilation and the use of a separate storage building for sleeping accommodation.”

The building also needed a great deal of repairs and decoration before it could be used for accommodation.
