Wage Increases In New Award

Wage increases are contained in a new award issued bv the Arbitration Court for New Zealand local bodies’ drivers

The award does not apply to drivers for the Auckland, Wellington. Hutt. Christchurch. Dunedin and Wanganui Citv Councils, the Upper Hutt. Petone, Oamaru and Grevmouth Borough Councils or the drivers of ambulance and bus services. Wages increases for drivers of any class of horse-drawn or motor vehicle or implement employed by councils, road. town, river, catchment, drainage and electric-power boards, range from 13s 4d to 14s 2d a week.

New provisions in the award are that a driver shall have another worker nearby when working earth-moving equipment on a face or drop more than 12 feet: and that drivers of trucks pulling a trailer of three tons or more gross weight will be paid 2s 6d a day. or part of day, extra.

No casual driver is to be employed if a permanent driver is readily available and willing to work.

Wage provisions in the award are retrospective to July 31. and the award extends from September 20, 1961. to that date in 1963 The award embodies settlements reached in conciliation.
