ARAB FORCE IN KUWAIT

Paratroopers Withdraw (N.Z, Press Assn. —Copyright) KUWAIT, Sept. 19. Two hundred cheering paratroopers marched off a desert ridge on the Iraq frontier yesterday as British forces began a gradual withdrawal from Kuwait. The men of the Second Parachute Battalion are scheduled to fly to Bahrain today and troops from the Arab League will take up their defence positions later along the no-man’s land between Kuwait and Iraq, the Associated Press said.

The sunburnt paratroopers have been dug in along Mutla Ridge, about 40 miles from Iraq, since July 2, eight days after the Iraqi Prime Minister (General Kassem) raised the Kuwait issue.

The British withdrawal of more than 2000 men would be gradual to permit a smooth takeover by Arab troops, a military spokesman said. There was no official word on when the next batch of British would leave.
