Week-end For Painters

Week-end painting schools in well-known scenic resorts of Canterbury have become a popular feature of the programme organised each year by the adult education department of the University of Canterbury for both beginners and experienced artists. The first of the new season will be held at Hanmer Springs from September 29 to October 1. Enrolments have already begun and it is exoected that about 20 or 30 will attend. The school will be directed by Mrs Colleen O’Connor, a part-time lecturer in art for the department: Miss Wendy Weir art and craft tutor for the department: and Mr Frank Gross, the artist who recently staged a diverse show in Christchurch. Artists will assemble in a private hotel on the Friday evening, the programme will be explained, and then there will be discussion and criticism of previous work which the artists may bring with them.

There will be a full day’s painting .in both oils and water colours on the Saturday with discusston. criticism, and films in the evening After more painting on the Sunday, the school will end late in the afternoon. If the weather is wet. indoor instruction with emphasis on drawing will be given. Previous painting schools have been held at Kaikoura. Akaroa, and Diamond Harbour.
