HAT FEVER

[By

“EVE"]

Spring emerging from winter brings hat fever. A woman’s distaste for much-worn winter clothing makes her long for a smart new spring hat. It is as good as a play to watch a woman choose a new hat. She puts an enchanting bit of nonsense on her head, turns sideways, arches her neck, raises her eyebrows quizzically, peers critically at her reflection. She moves back a pace or two, picks up a hand mirror, smiles and frowns as she views her head from every angle. All styles of hats seem to be fashionable this spring. But they have one thing in common—a high crown. Put on a two-year-old hat with a low crown and you will realise how outmoded it is. (See sketch below.) It just will not do. So a new hat must replace it. As this is “Spring Millinery Festival Week” in Christchurch, I am going to find a quiet little corner in some stere so that I can laugh at myself as I go through all the .performances of trying on hats.
