Several hundred pebble marched through the streets to Government House. Darwin. last nieht on behalf of *wo Malayans about to be deported.
Shouting, cheering, whistling crowds were met at the Govern men* House gates bv a groun of bolicemen. MC. W. Graham, ores’dent o< ‘he North Aii'tra’ia Wo-’-ers' ifniqn. and Mr R C. Ward M.L.C., a leading Darwin lawyer, told the police they wanted to see the Administra‘or. Mr R. B. Nott.
Mr Nott listened to six deletes who said that the people of Darwin were demanding that Daris B ; n ’aris, aged 31. and Jaffa Madunne. aged 35. should not be deported. Both men were indentured in the pearling industry, and are now out of work because of a slump in the price of pe=r] shell.
Mr Wott agreed to telephone the Minister for Immigration CMr A. R. Downer) and tell him of ’he feeling of the Darwin people, and ask him to delay the deportation orders until the matter could be further considered.
