OPOSSUM CONTROL

“Too Early For Results"

(Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Sept. 20. It was still too early to assess the results of the scheme designed to diminish the opossum menace under the new system of control by rabbit boards, said the Minister of Forests (Mr Gerard) in the House of Representatives this afternoon in reply to a question by Mr P. Blanchfield (Opposition, Westland). Mr Gerard said that the 25 rabbit boards so far applying to take up work under the scheme had not yet reached full-scale operations. The pilot schemes preceding the introduction of rabbit board control on pastoral lands indicated that rapid progress would be made in reducing the opossum population as the tempo of their work increased.
