U.S. HEART SURGEON

Lectures In NJL (NZ. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 20. A pioneer erf heart surgery, Dr. E. Harked, of Boston, United States, arrived in Auckland today and will give a lecture at the Green Lane Hospital tomorrow evening. Dr. Harken is in New Zealand at the invitation of Sir Dougias Robb. He will leave 1 on Friday flor Australia and the Far East, where he will give a series of heart surgery development lectures. Dr. Harken will lecture on the background of heart surgery and of developments for the future. Such developments may eventually lead to the replacement of whole organs by mechanical ones. Dr. Harken performed the first conSistentiy - successful elective surgery on the inside of the heart, which involved the removal of steel fragments from the hearts of wounded servicemen during World War 11.

He is an associate professor of clinical surgery at Harvard University, and is in charge of the department of heart surgery at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston.
