CHASING OF MOTORISTS

Officers Not To Take Risks

Traffic officers in Canterbury are allowed to chase speeding motorists provided they do not take undue risks.

Recently the Wellington traffic superintendent (Mr J. Anderson) said his officers had been told to let a culprit get away rather than engage in a dangerous chase The City Council traffic superintendent (Mr H. W. Birdling) and a spokesman for the Transport Department both said that traffic officers were allowed to chase speeding motorists provided they did not risk their lives or those of other road users. “We are not going to abandon chases as there is a certain onus on us to get at least the registration number of the offender,” said the Transport Department spokesman. Both departments leave the decision to the traffic officer. The officers were trained to take calculated risks, said Mr Birdling. Microwave speed detectors and radio were used a lot to stop offenders without chasing them.
