PROPULSION BELT
Possible Use On Moon
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) BUFFALO (New York), September 19. An experimental mancarrying rocket belt, which eventually might be used on the moon, will be tested by the United States Air Force. The Bell Aerosystems Company, developer of the device, said it had received a contract from the Aerospace Medical Laboratory of the Air Force to measure accelerations and control responses during 40 rocket belt flights. An Air Force spokesman said the study also would provide data for the investigation of man’s movements in a weightless space environment or on the moon’s surface.
The rocket device, which is strapped to the operator’s back, already has been tested successfully in more than 50 free flights. Bell originally developed the rocket under a contract with the United States ■ Army Transportation Research Command.
