POWER SUPPLY AUTHORITIES

Secretaries And Engineers Meet

The electricity industry in New Zealand must adapt itself to changing conditions or stagnate and decay, said the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) yesterday when welcoming more than 200 engineers and secretaries of member bodies of the Electrical Supply Authorities’ Association of New Zealand.

The fall in the prices of New Zealand’s exports, the probability of Britain joining the European Economic Community. and the increase of population and industry in New Zealand Were factors which were leading to new conditions, Mr Manning said. “Plants if they do not adapt themselves to changing conditions face decay and obliteration. The same could be said of human beings, and industry is the organisation of human beings. “Electricity is one of the biggest industries in New Zealand and it looks forward to a progressive life I know that your vigour will ensure the future of electrical industry.” Mr Manning said. Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon. chairman of the Christchurch City Council electricity committee. and Mr W. S. N. Rennie, president of the Elec, trical Supply Authorities’ Association. also welcomed the engineers and secretaries. The conference then heard an address. “Management in Practice,” by the general manager of Shell Oil. N.Z.. Ltd. (Mr C. E. A. Baird). The engineers and secretaries then divided to hear reports and have papers read to them on technical aspects of the industry.
