RABBIT AREAS

Board Control Likely (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 19. Proposals by the Rabbit Destruction Council for covering three areas totalling three million acres and a quarter will, if approved by the Minister of .Agriculture . (Mr Hayman) leave little country to be dealt with. The areas at present under action are in South Auckland, one million acres and a quarter; Taranaki, one million acres and a quarter: and Ashburton, 750,000 acres. Meetings have been held in all the areas to explain the schemes to farmers, and. although there has been some opposition, it is expected that the council will recommend to the Minister that the areas be brought under rabbit board administration. “We appreciate that the rabbit is not causing serious economic loss in the areas with which we are dealing, although the infestation is much heavier in many places than even we believed.” said •he deputy-chairman of the council (Mr J. J. Shine) after a meeting of the council in Wellington today. “We are very concerned that as long as any rabbitinfested country remains outside a board area, there s always a threat to the rest if the country.”
