Govt Decision Soon (NZ. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 19. The Government was near making a‘. decision on the implementation of equal pay in the Public Service, said the Minister of; Labour (Mr Shahd) in the House of Rep. resentotives tonight when the vote fot the Public Service Commission was being considered. The policy of the Government wa* equal pay for equal work under equal conditions, but on the problem of defining equal conditions diffi. culty had been met in negotiating with the Public Service Association in finding a reasap'nable interpretation or “equal conditions,” said Mr Shand.

For the majority 6f women in the service the case was cleat, but women had certain advantages in conditions that they were not anxious to give up, such, as early retirement, Women retired 10 years earlier, paid.in less, and drew out 10 years longer. “We have made a proposal to the Public Service Association which, we hope, will assist a decision to be made ip two or three weeks,” said Mr Shand.
