FUNERAL COSTS

Reduction For State Only (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. Sept 19 There has been no general reduction in the costs of conducting funeral In New Zealand, according to advice received from the Trade Practices and Prices Division today.

The impression that a general reduction had been made was given by a misreading of a speech given by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) during the discussion of the Estimates in the House of Representatives on September 8 What Mr Marshall said, as reported by Hansard, was: “As a result of inquiries made by the Trade Practices and Prices Division in Auckland. the eost to the Crown of ■ conducting funerals had been reduced by 33 1-3 per cent"

This applied only to Crown or State funerals, but was interpreted to some quarters as applying to funerals generally.
