BURIAL IN U.S.
“No Better Tribute”
NDOLA, Sept. 19. It was officially announced that the funeral of Mr Hammarskjold will be held in the United States, reported the Associated Press. The “New York Times” said today that the body of Mr Hammarskjold should be buried in the grounds of the United Nations headquarters in New York. It should be placed under a fitting monument to remind all men of the values for which he lived and died. “There could be no better tribute to him.” the newspaper said in an editorial. “But for the patient, indefatigable leadership of Dag Hammarskjold. the United Nations might not exist today.” it said. “Quietly, shrewdly, persistently he laboured to maintain it against heavy odds and to enhance its effectiveness in a world that teeters on the brink of catastrophe. "... If humanity survives the menace of a nuclear holocaust that he strove so valiantly to avert, history will surely mark his career as one of the great forces for a better world. “Mr Hammarskiold’s death is an incalculable loss He had built himself and his office into one of the great hopes for world peace. . He came to represent what was honourable and rational In a chaotic world full of hate and snsnicion ” the "New York Times” said. The New York “Herald Tribune" said: "The death of Dag Hammarskjold is an overwhelming personal tragedy and for the Congo (it) is calamitous. “However opinions may varv on the motives and methods of the United Nations intervention in Katanga, there can be no doubt at all of Hammar•'kiold’s intent: to bring neace and unitv to a riven and war-ins land.
“ To the world at large, the greatest tragedv of all is that the crash of the Secre-tarv-General's nlane may have struck a blow at the foundations of the United Nations itself. There is no doubt that the world organisation is confronted by the greatest challenge of its 16-year-old history. . . ."
