General News

Running Repairs “National finance today resembles nothing so much as a very old high-pressure tyre which keeps bursting.” the Governor - General (Lord Cobham) said in an address to the New Zealand Bank Officers’ Guild, at Wellington yesterday. “We patiently patch the place, but within a few miles the heat engendered by the speed of events has caused another burst, and again the car has to be halted and the new place patched ”—(P.A.)

Advice To Delegates

Latimer Hall was now the property of the Young Women’s Christian Association. and he hoped delegates would bear that in mind during their speeches and discussions. Mr W. S. MacGibbon, chairman of the Christchurch City Council electricity committee, said to secretaries and engineers of member bodies of the Electrical Supply Authorities’ Association of New Zealand at the opening of their annual conference in the hall yesterday. “The hall was built by a Mr Worthington, and for many years was known as the ‘Temple of Truth’—and I hope you will bear that in mind, as well.” Mr Mac Gibbon added amid laughter.

No Christmas Cards

The Christchurch Drainage Board would not send Christmas cards this year, the chairman (Mr F. R. Price) said at a meeting of the board last evening. To Mr R. H. Stillwell, he said the cost had varied between £3 and £lO, exclusive of postage. “Is it worth stifling the real spirit of Christmas for the sake of £3?” asked Mr Stillwell. The spirit of Christmas had been lost by an exchange of greetings between local bodies said Mr T. D. Flint. A motion by Mr Stillwell that cards be sent was heavily defeated. Floating Vehicle About 20 Territorials of C Section, Ist Division, Royal New Zealand Army Provost Corps, will attempt on Saturday to float a utility vehicle across Lake Forsyth. The vehicle will be driven on to a large tarpaulin at the water’s edge which will have its sides folded and tied to the roof of the vehicle, encasing it. It will then be pushed out. Two soldiers will sit in the seat of the vehicle and paddle the boat thus formed. The launching is part of normal training of the type that would be useful in South-east Asia when fording deep, wide rivers, but cannot be used where the water is rough. Whitebait Cheaper Nearly 9001 b of West Coast whitebait was sold yesterday in Christchurch fish markets. It is selling in city shops for 16s to 17s a pound. Fresh oysters were again available, and more will arrive today. Fish was scarce, but better supplies are expected today. Prices which rose slightly were: Groper 5s 6d a pound, soles, tarakihi, blue cod, and flounders 4s a pound, gurnard, ling and bream 2s 6d a pound, and crayfish 4s 6d a pound. “Novelty Evening” What was described as “a novelty evening” was held recently by the Mayfield Miniature Rifle Club, when members’ wives were invited to take part in a shoot.
