Bomb Attempts On German Leaders
(W Z.P. A .-Reuter— CopyngM)
BONN, Sept. 17. Attempts have been made on the lives of the West German Chancellor (Dr. Adenauer) and his Minister of Defence (Mr Franz-Josef Strauss). Both were sent bombs through the post, but in each case the parcels were intercepted and opened safely. The package sent to Dr Adenauer on Friday was intercepted in a routine X-ray examination of all parcels mailed to the Chancellor’s office. The parcel was posted in
Munich, the spokesman said. Experts said the bomb was very dangerous. The package was addressed to Dr. Adenauer, a Government spokesman' said. An immediate investigation was launched. Government officials did not say when the package arrived. The spokesman said he believed this was the third or fourth bomb parcel' sent to Dr. Adenauer. A similar bomb was sent to Mr Strauss, the Defence Ministry announced. The Ministry said the bomb, received yesterday, was discovered in time and opened safely. Its mechanism was similar to the one sent to Dr. Adenauer, which contained batteries connected to explosive. The Defence Ministry announcement said Mr Strauss had received a letter by separate post saying he would receive a present that would do him good. Munich police said today that the parcel received by Dr. Adenauer was addressed in block letters similar to those on a bomb parcel sent to the Chancellor in February this year. The sender’s address given on last; week’s parcel—Maxplatz, Munich —was the same as on the February parcel.
