NEWCASTLE CUP
Prince Argon Beaten (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) NEWCASTLE. Sept. 17 The New Zealand stayer. Prince Argon. lost caste for the Metropolitan when he failed in yesterday’s Newcastle Cup. Prince Argon, the 3-1 favourite, plodded to the post after being third from the furlong. Prince Argon, which was heavily backed last week to win the Metropolitan, and firmed to the third line of betting yesterday, had the run of the race. The cup was won by the 33-1 chance, Rock Mai,, which held off three late challengers after taking the lead three furlongs from the finish. Rock Mai, an aged gelding, went to the post belter than Prince Rezan and Prince Argon, which both appeared certain to run down the leader beginning the final furlong. Rock Mai beat Prince Rezan by a length with a short head to Prince Argon third. The 11 furlongs took 2min 17 3-ssec. Prince Argon, from the successful T. J Smith stable, was favourite throughout the betting.
