Resistor Wins Decisively In Ern Smith Handicap

Resistor made amends for a defeat at Addington last month and a failure at New Brighton a fortnight earlier, with a decisive win in the Em Smith Handicap on Saturday.

She was sent to the lead at the end of half a mile and from then on was never headed. She was kept up to her work near the furlong post and responded well to win by three lengths in 3min 19 2-ssec for the 12 furlongs, one-fifth of a second slower than Queen Ngaio’s time in the Henry Mace Handicap.

Graeme Scott was first out, but over the last mile he trailed Resistor. Resistor was clear of him by two lengths racing to the straight, with

Rojo, Dianthus Girl and Chances Are next, three lengths in front of Indianna. Rojo broke just after straightening uip. Resistor did not really look like being put to the test and won well by three lengths from Graeme Scott, which should soon improve on his effort and gain another win. Indianna. which met trouble when Our Own broke and dropped back through the field inside the last seven furlongs, trotted her best race for some time to make ground for third, four lengths behind Graeme Scott and a length and a half in front of Chances Are. which met trouble twice in the running. Front Line made up ground for fifth, ahead of Dianthus Girl, Rojo, Kennoway, Tonty's Pride and Pohutukawa.

Tonty’s Pride was checked inside the last seven furlongs and dropped back on Front Line. Pohutujcawa, Indianna and Kennoway also met trouble. First And Second The stablemates, Cairnbrae and Trusted, finished first and second respectively in the Bowhill Handicap. Caimbrae was lucky to escape serious trouble in a mix-up at the start caused by Sarona, which drew No. 1 on the front mark, breaking and galloping out. He moved up three wide in the back straight, being handy racing past the half-mile.

Chelsea Lady made the pace, with Trusted second on the outside of Regina Chief. They were the first three into the straight, where Regina Chief broke, disorganising the horses behind him. Worthy River was fourth into the straight, with Sea Chase and Caimbrae next, and Spangled Princess improving sharply from mid-field.

Caimbrae and Trusted soon drew clear, with Caimbrae doing best to beat his stablemate by a length. Trusted was unchallenged for second, being a length and a half in front of Spangled Princess, which finished well. La Storm made ground for fourth, ahead of Sand Drift. Chelsea Lady, Worthy River, and Loyal Brigade. The favourite, Southern Cross, drifted badly early. John Scott Again John Scott, a winner on the course a fortnight earlier, re. peated that effort in the Shirley Handicap, for which he was favourite. John Scott was first out, but at the end of three furlongs and a half he was passed by Flaming Way. From then on he received a perfect run. Flaming Way led Witch Doctor and John Scott racing to the straight, with Free Return, Winterlight, Delight, Bandsaw and Mayfair Star handiest of the others. Delight broke at the straight entrance. John Scott worked clear at the furlong post and quickly moved up to Flaming Way. He had him well covered 50 yards out and won handily by a length. Flaming Way trotted a sound race and he should win next time out. He was four lengths in front of a likely improver in Free Return. with two lengths to Witch Doctor and a short length to Winterlight. The last-named met trouble early and was forced wide near

the seven furlongs and the straight entrance. He was three lengths in front of an early breaker in Bandsaw, with six lengths to Mayfair Star.

Implore Narrowly Implore was never far from the lead in the Pacific Handicap and ran on slightly better than Parados over the last 100 yards to win narrowly. Young Betty, Wee Mon and Heathmount, had turns in front until Axis, which had lost 50 yards at the start, took control at the end of six furlongs. Axis still had charge racing to the straight, where Heathmount, Real Dieman, Wee Mon, Implore, Young Betty. Parados and Johnny Thunder were handy. Axis was soon in trouble and Implore, which was joined by Parados, fought out a keen finish, with Implore winning by half a neck. Parados, a slow beginner, was not disgraced. He was two lengths in front of Young Betty, with a length and a half to Johnny Thunder, which came home strongly. Heathmount was a close fifth, ahead of Antonius, Terrygowan and Wee Mon. Maiden Event Paul Bunyan worked to the front before the end of three furlongs in the Maiden Event and the Fallacy gelding was not afterwards headed. The win favourite, Aiblins, was among those to lose ground at the start and he tailed- the field throughout. Paul Bunyan set a sound pace and raced clear by three lengths from Hal Diamond racing to the straight, with Dieman Lad, Taurua, Doctor Dan, which broke, Simmonds and Countess Hanover handy. Paul Bunyan was hotly challenged in the straight, but fought off his rivals to win handily by a length. Countess Hanover, which was

hampered racing to the straight, made up ground for second, a placing full of merit. Southern Smoke finished solidly to dead-heat for third with Hal Diamond two lengths behind Countess Hanover, with Hiya a short length back fifth, a length in front of Dieman Lad, with half a length to Simmonds and gaps to Miorano Boy and Wee Mike.
