POSITION IN N.A.T.O.
Objection To General (N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) OTTAWA, Sept. 15. A Canadian Socialist member of Parliament said yesterday the appointment of a German general to a senior N.A.T.O. post was “immoral,” and demanded his replacement, the Canadian Press reported. Mr H. W. Herridge (Cooperative Commonwealth Federation) alleged that the officer, General Adolph Heusinger, who is chairman of N.A.T.O. military representatives in Washington, was a war-time Nazi and had been named in Nuremburg Trial documents as responsible for the massacre of “thousands" of partisans in Nazi-occupied countries.
Mr Herridge raised the matter during discussion of defence estimates. The Minister of Defence (Mr Douglas Harkness) replied that in 1950 General Heusinger had been appointed Chief Military Adviser to the West German Chancellor (Dr. Adenauer).
Mr Herridge, stating that General Heusinger’s N.A.T.O. appointment caused suspicion among the Communist-bloc nations and “does our cause harm,” said that many Canadians objected to it, and that former servicemen resented it He said that the General should be replaced by someone with a “clean military record.”
