N.I. POWER NEEDS
Mistake In Report (N.Z. Press AstuCiatlon) AUCKLAND, Sept. 17. No “partial installation” of plant would be needed in 1963-64 and 1964-65 to meet power needs in the North Island, said the Minister of Electricity (Mr Goosman) today. In a telephone interview from his home at Morrinsville, Mr Goosman said there had been a mistake in the printed report of the Powerplanning Committee laid before Parliament last Thursday. Mr Goosman referred to the part of the report which said: “Additional plant is being added to Ohakuri, Atiamuri, and Aratiatia, so that although there remains some need for a partial installation in 1963-64 and 1964-65, just before the link-up with the South Island, the Maraetai II plant will not be needed for many years thereafter.’’
Mr Goosman said the draft report said there would be a deficiency in generation to meet peak loads over short periods at these times. The Electricity Department would be able to meet these brief demands by manipulating the supply. There was no suggestion of building a new installation to meet the demand, Mr Goosman said.
