FRESH WATER FROM THE SEA.—This view of the Freeport (Texas) salt-water conversion plant shows most of the 12 evaporators in which the salt water is turned into fresh water by distillation. Located in a coastal marshland, the unit draws its water from the Gulf of Mexico. The city of Freeport is buying half the output, and a chemical company is purchasing the remainder. The Freeport plant produces fresh water from sea water at half the cost of the next most efficient plant in the world.
