Carr had to stave off a desperate late rally by C Courtney, of California, before winning 2 and 1. Nscklaus was 1 down to J. Humm, of New York, ajter nine holes, but won 3 and 1. Others to reach the afternoon quarter-final round were D Wysong (Texas), R Morvilie (Oklahoma), G Francis (New York), C. Carmichael (Indiana), C. Smith (North Carolina) and M. Methvin (Arkansas).
