RUSSIAN ROCKET

Successful Test (N.Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright) MOSCOW, Sept. 15. Russia successfully launched a new and more powerful multistage carrier rocket into the central Pacific on Wednesday, the official news agency, Tass, reported. The rocket covered a distance of about 7500 miles, Tass said.

The flight of the rocket and the operation of all its stages fully conformed with the set programme.

The dummy of the last stage of the carrier rocket hit the water less than one kilometre (about 1000 yards) from the target. This confirmed the high precision of the rocket’s con. trol system, the agency said. The penultimate stage burned out as planned while re-entering the dense layers of the atmosphere, Tass said. Tass announced on Sunday night that a series of rocket tests would be carried out between Wednesday and today, the British United Press said. It announced that the test area was about 1000 miles south-west of Hawaii. It warned aircraft and ships normally using the area to keep out for their own safety. Russia used the Pacific as a testing area in July, 1960, when rockets were fired about 8000 miles from Russia, the agency reported.
