Cricket BANNED FOR LIFE
West Indian Fast Bowler
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 15. The West Indian fast bowler, R. E Gilchrist, has been banned for life from the North Staffordshire League, the “Daily Mail’’ reported today. The ban was announced yesterday after an emergency committee meeting considered umpires’ reports on incidents in two vital championship matches last month. In one match, Gilchrist, who was sent home during the last West Indies tour of India, was alleged to have abused an umpire who rejected a number of lbw appeals.
In the other, when the opposition were battling against the clock for a win, Gilchrist was alleged to have walked back slowly to his mark—at the sightscreen and then ambled in.
On other occasions he sprinted in and threw the ball. When he was “called” there was more trouble with the umpire. When the winning hit was made. Gilchrist was alleged to have picked up the ball and hurled it at the batsman The “Daily Mail” said Gilchrist had recently signed a two-year contract with Great Chell, Stoke, which would would have brought him £37 a game.
