Alcoholism

Sir,—l hasten to assure Mr Fred Miles that my humour was quite unintentional, as there is a very grave danger that, by over-emphasising alcoholism as a disease, the will to resist would be lost. Rather would I call alcoholism a weakness which can be and has been overcome. Much as I admire-his views, I cannot entirely agree that the alcoholic can not be trusted and suggest "unreliable" is more applicable. I have known alcoholics (those who endeavour to help themselves, often on the “waggon” for months) whose integrity would put many a “pewsitter” to shame. Finally. I repeat what I have often said before: one of the greatest obstacles to the rehabilitation of the chronic alcoholic is his mates—the blokes he works and drinks with.— Yours, etc., D. C McKIE. Benmore, Sept 13. 1961.
