“Poorly-Paid’’ Secretaries

(N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 15. Trade union secretaries were the worst-paid section of the community, the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) said in the House of Representatives today. Speaking on the introduction of the Industrial Con. ciliation and Arbitration Amendment Bill, he said: *T confess one thing that has worried me about this legislation is the possible weakening of the financial position of some unions.

“This could mean they might have some difficulty in paying good salaries to their union secretaries. That would be a pity, because I think union secretaries should be well paid.”
