ANTARCTIC FLIGHTS
Fuelling Base Wanted
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) MELBOURNE, September 15.
The Soviet Government is seeking to secure landing rights in Australia to establish an airlift of men and supplies to the Antarctic, the Canberra correspondent of the Melbourne “Herald” reported today. The negotiations have been going on between the Australian Government and Russia for several months.
Russia wants the right to land its long-range aircraft at Perth—probably on flights through Indonesia. The plan is to deliver supplies and relief staffs direct by air to its main Antarctic base, Mirny.
