Cricketing Chore
“It appears that far too many senior and near-senior players regard regular attendance at serious practices as an unnecessary chore,” says a report from the Riccarton Cricket Club’s selection committee which appears in the club’s annual report “To get the best results, team captains must be more than ‘Saturday only’ tacticians,” the report said. “Too many captains were conspicuous by their absence from practice or by their indifferent attendance. Their viewpoint can only be extremely narrow and their example to players can only be against the best interests of the club. “There may be a case for appointment by the committee of captains who are not only able to attend practices but are also alive to their administrative duties,” the report stated. This criticism by the Riccarton selectors may bring some results. But it applies to several of the other senior dubs, just as strongly.
