RECRUITS TO TEACHING
Headmaster’s Enterprise (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 14. An example of how the teaching profession can help solve the teacher shortage was given today by the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent). “I am greatly heartened,” said Mr Tennent, “to learn of the enterprise of Mr D. A. Smith, principal of Mana College, near Wellington.”
Mr Smith had some sixth form pupils who were undecided on a career, and as he considered 10 of them were eminently suitable to be trained as teachers, he arranged for them to spend two days of the last week of their recent term holidays in primary schools in the area which had resumed for the third term during that week. "I have now learnt,” said Mr Tennent, “that of those 10 pupils, nine have now applied to enter training college next year, and the tenth pupil has decided to have another year in the sixth form With the idea of entering training college in 1963. “This is a truly magnificent effort, and I would like to congratulate Mr Smith on his foresight in providing such practical assistance for these senior pupils to help them in the choice of a rewarding career,” said Mr Tennent.
